Must-have of the day: A small fix for overflowing recyclables. **

Yesterday's fun fact answer: Blue – often called “St. Patrick’s blue” – was once strongly associated with St. Patrick, but green became the holiday’s dominant color later through Irish nationalism and shamrock symbolism.

Celebrated on March 18, Global Recycling Day highlights the growing importance of recycling in a world producing massive amounts of waste.

Established in 2018 by the Global Recycling Foundation, the day promotes recyclable materials as the planet’s “seventh resource.” The world generates more than 2 billion tons of municipal solid waste each year, and that number is expected to rise. In the United States, paper and cardboard remain among the most recycled materials, while aluminum stands out because it can be recycled again and again.

Recycling helps conserve raw materials, reduce landfill use and cut energy demand in manufacturing.

The first spacewalk happened on March 18, 1965, when Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov became the first person to float in open space.

During the Voskhod 2 mission, Leonov spent 10 minutes outside the spacecraft, drifting 17 feet away while connected by a tether and wearing a pressurized spacesuit. The feat proved humans could work outside a spacecraft, a major milestone in the space race.

In the vacuum of space, Leonov’s suit expanded so much that he struggled to fit back through the airlock and had to manually release pressure from the suit, turning a historic achievement into a close call.

Manwich, introduced in 1969, helped make Sloppy Joes even more popular by turning the sandwich into an easy weeknight shortcut. Image courtesy of Unsplash.

Today is National Sloppy Joe Day, celebrating the messy sandwich that became a comfort food classic.

The Sloppy Joe likely emerged in the early 20th century, with one popular story crediting a cook named Joe in Sioux City, Iowa, for adding tomato sauce to loose meat sandwiches during the 1930s. Other theories point to Sloppy Joe’s Bar in Key West or Havana. However it started, the sandwich became an affordable, filling meal during the Depression era. Made with seasoned ground beef in a sweet-tangy tomato sauce, it became a family favorite. Today, Sloppy Joes remain a nostalgic American comfort food.

To celebrate with a scratch-made version, brown ground beef with onion, green pepper and garlic, then stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire, brown sugar and mustard, simmer until thick and spoon onto buns.
